Business in Fife are "bucking the trend" according to West Fife MP Willie Rennie who was commenting after new figures released by the Committee of Scottish Clearing Bankers revealed an 11% increase in the number of new businesses start-ups in Fife between compared to a 16% national decline over the same period

The third quarter of 2009 saw 271 business start ups in West Fife compared to 244 the year before, while across Scotland during the same period the number of start ups dropped from 4598 to just 3,861 - a fall of 737, or around 16%.

Commenting West Fife MP Willie Rennie said:

"These figures show just what a great place Fife is to do business with transport, business support and a great supply of workers.

"Small businesses are the lifeblood of the local economy, and it's extremely encouraging to see Fife bucking the trend at a time when businesses across Scotland are struggling because of the banks' reluctance to lend to small businesses.

"Despite Fife's success, it's vital that all small businesses are given a fighting chance to get through the recession. This means getting the bankers who did so much to cause the current recession lending again to small businesses."
