Local MP secures review of drugs advice services

Fife Police Chief, Peter Wilson, has agreed to initiate a review of the Drugs Hotline after local MP, Willie Rennie, raised concerns. The Drugs Hotline takes reports of drug-related crime from members of the public. However, Mr Rennie was concerned that some drug users and their families were calling the Hotline looking for advice about kicking the habit. Following his intervention, Chief Constable Wilson has agreed to ensure that all call handlers are able to pass on numbers for drug user rehabilitation programmes.

Mr Rennie has said he is very happy with the outcome:

"The Drug Hotline plays an important role in tackling drug crime. It is essential that members of the public are able to provide information that can lead to arrests. Where necessary, this should be anonymous and secure.

"I received reports, however, that some people were calling this number looking for advice on helping friends and family to overcome drug addiction. They were obviously surprised and disturbed to find that they were being asked to report their loved ones to the police.

"I am very pleased with the solution that Chief Constable Wilson has proposed. Those calling the Drug Hotline will now be able to get access to help, advice and support. That is only right."
